The Lifelong Importance of Baby Swimming

Humans aren’t designed to swim, that’s why we have legs and arms instead of fins and a tail. It’s an activity that needs to be learned, developed, and nurtured.

However, babies are born with two inherent gifts that allow them to be comfortable in the water almost immediately — an amphibian reflex and a mammalian (bradycardic) dive reflex.

The amphibian reflex instinctively encourages the child to flex their arms and knees in coordination with their hips while in the water — giving the impression of swimming. The mammalian dive reflex allows a young baby to be submerged without swallowing water — their breathing stops, while oxygen is preferentially diverted to the brain and heart.

The mammalian dive reflex allows a young baby to be submerged without swallowing water — their breathing stops, while oxygen is preferentially diverted to the brain and heart.

Both of these intrinsic abilities are naturally massive advantages in learning to swim. The issue is, that at around 10 months old, humans lose these valuable responses.

Our baby swimming classes — available for babies from 3 to 10 months — turn these soon-lost automatic actions into learned skills. For life.

Toddlers, teens, and adults who learn how to swim as babies show greater water confidence, have a much more coordinated aquatic movement, and are comfortable blowing bubbles into the water.
